Southern Legal Counsel (SLC) is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) public interest law firm located in Gainesville, Florida, with a staff of 13.

 

Comptroller General Areas of Responsibility

  • Finance and budgeting

  • Payroll changes, updates and allocations

  • Grants management

  • Financial reports to Board

  • Financial information to auditor

  • HR administration

  • Supervise Bookkeeper

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in accounting, finance or related fields

  • Three years experience in accounting, auditing, or financial management preferable

  • Full-time

  • Exceptional numerical ability

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Experience with spreadsheet and financial analysis software

  • Good communication skills

  • Attention to detail coupled with patience and tenacity

  • Knowledge of regulatory and financial standards and requirements for non-profits

  • Understanding of taxation, payroll and other fiscal aspects of a business

Specific Duties

1.         Plan and manage budget.

Develop budget for organization (with Exec. Dir.)

Develop budgets and financial reporting for grants (with Exec. Dir.)

Certify expenditures to grantors

Report on expenditures to Board 

2.         Manage banking and other accounts.

Monitor balances and transfers

Review signatories and addresses of bank accounts and mutual funds to determine if up to date

Transfer money to 403(b)(7) account

Monitor all account balances for FDIC/NCUA limits

3.         Manage accounting activities. 

Authorize online paychecks

Develop allocations (with Exec. Dir.) of expenditures to funds (Bookkeeper implements)

Develop and track allocations to grants

Track litigation expenses

Bill co-counsel for reimbursement of case litigation expenses as appropriate

Prepare documents for seeking awards of costs in cases

 

4.         Manage audit activities.

Review contract with auditor (with Board Audit Comm., Exec. Dir.)

Prepare and provide documents to auditors

Review draft audit (with Board Audit Comm., Exec. Dir.)

Send final audit to Board & Funding Florida Legal Aid

  

5.         Risk Management

Maintain insurance for Directors & Officers

Maintain malpractice insurance for attorneys

Maintain ERISA bonding for 403(b)(7) funds

Maintain general commercial liability insurance

Comply with wage & hour overtime laws (with Exec. Dir.)

Maintain workers compensation

 

6.         Ensure compliance with tax laws.

Ensure compliance to maintain 501(c)(3) status (with Board Audit Comm., Exec. Dir., Auditor)

File with IRS accurate and  timely forms:  941, 1099, 1096, 5500, W-2 & W-3. Track 990 filing by Auditor.

Make EFTPS 941 withholding payments to federal government

Maintain employee W-4 tax forms and send them W-2 forms by January 31

Maintain W-9 forms for contractors and send them 1099 forms by January 31

File 403(b)(7) Report and Enrollment Update

Renew Florida Sales Tax Exemption

File Florida State Re-employment Tax Return

File Florida State Re-employment Tax Rate Update

File property tax exemption

File Section 125 Enrollment Update

 

7.         Ensure all corporate registrations and permits are maintained.

File Florida Corporation Registration with State

File Solicitation Registration with State

Worker’s Compensation Audit/Renewal with State

Fire & Burglar Alarm Reduction Document with Sheriff

 

8.         HR Administration

Onboard new employees: W-4, health and disability insurance, FSA accounts, 403(b) accounts, I-9

Add and delete email accounts

Add and delete authorized users for credit cards

Add and delete alarm codes

Add and delete software users

Oversee leave logs

 

9.      Supervise Bookkeeper

Deposits

Bank/investment statement reconciliations

Record donations in Quickbooks

Financial filing

Postage and copy logs

Check writing

Travel statements and reimbursements

Vendor communication

ATTORNEY

Public interest law firm located in Gainesville, Florida, seeks full time civil rights litigator. Southern Legal Counsel litigates cases across Florida primarily in constitutional law, special education, disability law, LGBTQ rights, homeless advocacy, and governmental accountability. Future cases open to other areas of interest.

Job position

Legal Work:

  • Representation of indigent clients in education, health, public benefits, and housing cases

  • Litigation in federal and state courts and administrative hearings (including writing pleadings and briefs, conducting discovery and motion practice, handling hearings and trials, and arguing appeals) in individual and impact cases as lead or co-counsel

  • Policy advocacy to effect change in local and state government

  • Training, community education and outreach presentations

  • Collaboration with pro bono, public interest and legal aid attorneys

Other Activities Shared Office-wide:

  • Professional development

  • Professional networking, Bar-related activities

  • Assist with grant writing and fundraising activities

  • Develop and maintain relationships with pro bono attorneys

  • Supervise law student and undergraduate volunteers

  • Review intake

  • Provide material for website and social media

Qualifications

Required:

  • Excellent research, writing, communication and collaboration skills essential

  • Demonstrated dedication to the public interest

  • Member of The Florida Bar, or admission within six months of hire

  • Ability to travel as needed

Preferred:

  • Three years experience as a litigation attorney

  • Courtroom experience

Benefits

  • Starting salary for entry level attorney is $70,000 and increases based on years of experience.
